A blog name
We couldn't come up with a name for this blog for the looooongest time! We started with climbandsmile, then considered oyfortheloveoflife, then kvetchingandclimbing. Nothing seemed right....and then....we came up up with lchaim, but that was taken. But climbchai was not! "Chai" means life in Hebrew, the "ch" is kind of a throaty "h"not a "ch" like the beverage. It would look like this in Hebrew: חי.
So there we have it, a new blog with a new title and a new adventure that starts in FOUR days! We have packing and prepping to do, but we are mostly on target for a Monday departure. First stop, Missoula, Montana to visit a very good friend of ours. Then we are headed to Squamish, British Columbia with a stop for Shabbat somewhere along the way.
In other news, the trip has been downscaled a touch. We are now aiming for roughly 6 months with some added international adventures.
Have any climbing destination suggestions? Good meal ideas for the road? Send them our way!

The trip is quickly approaching
Hello world! <-- that's the first (and maybe the last) thing I learned how to program in Java and it's so appropriate here!
It's the end of January and in 7 months Patrick and I are hitting the road for 1 year to climb all over the U.S. and maybe abroad. This has been a dream and goal of mine for years, and now that I'm pretty much finished with school and have saved enough money, it's becoming a reality! Lots of words come to mind when I think about the trip- irresponsibility is the big negative- I'm putting my adult life on hold for a year to travel and climb and discover. How can an overly prepared, obsessed about succeeding in the future, need to be proactive and get a million things done per day, PhD student just take off for a year?? Easily when the trip has been planned and prepared for and saved for and when I've convinced myself that I'll get so much out of this next year, enough to far outweigh the concerns. In the upcoming months I'll be saving money like crazy (we're talking about living a life of pure necessity and scrutinizing every penny spent), I'll plan a rough map of the destinations, and I'll up my training in the climbing gym and outside. Mostly though, I'll get super excited, randomly jump for joy, and try to appreciate and contain the butterflies in my stomach. Stay tuned for more!
